For this second event, we are honored to welcome Christian Gates St-Pierre. Christian is an archaeologist trained in Canada and the United States. He has worked for many years as a consultant and with private preventive archaeology firms. He has been a lecturer at Université Laval and, since 2016, has taught Indigenous archaeology in the Department of Anthropology at the Université de Montréal. His research focuses on the archaeology of Indigenous peoples of Quebec and Eastern North America, ceramic and bone technologies, food practices, and social interactions in the past. He is also interested in ethical issues in archaeology, the protection and promotion of archaeological heritage, and the decolonization of archaeology through collaborations with Indigenous peoples.

First Nations have been present in Quebec for at least 12,000 years. But what about Montreal and Mount Royal? What archaeological evidence shows their presence on the Mountain? Where are these findings located, and how old are they? More importantly, what do they teach us about the significance of the Mountain in the daily lives of Indigenous peoples, the encounters with the first Europeans there, and the consequences of these interactions? This presentation will attempt to answer some of these questions.
