Managing the Territory
The Mount Royal territory includes the City of Westmount and four boroughs of the City of Montréal, namely Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Outremont, Ville-Marie and Le Plateau-Mont Royal.Benefitting from a central geographic location, the territory is home to residents, cemeteries, several large hospital institutions, universities and schools, as well as places of worship. Despite their different missions, these key actors all share a concern about the protection of Mount Royal.
Given that Mount Royal has been declared a heritage site by the Government of Quebec, the Ministry of Culture and Communications is responsible for establishing a conservation plan for the territory in addition to defining and implementing guidelines for its preservation, rehabilitation and improvement. The ministry is also responsible for coordinating the acquisition and exchange of knowledge related to Mount Royal, as well as studying work requests on the territory and making necessary recommendations.
Key Players
Summits held in Montréal in 2002 and 2013 (Sommet de Montréal and Sommet du Mont-Royal) confirmed the importance of working together to protect and improve Mount Royal. As a result, several bodies were created, including the Bureau du Mont-Royal, an administrative unit governed by the City of Montréal whose mandate is to ensure the enhancement, accessibility and heritage conservation of Mount Royal. To support the Bureau in its actions and reflections, the Table de concertation du Mont-Royal was created in 2005 with some 30 member organizations and observers. It aims to establish consensus on the accessibility, protection and enhancement of Mount Royal in order to contribute to the harmonious management of the territory.
Involved for more than 30 years in the protection and improvement of Mount Royal, Les amis de la montagne has a strong voice in all discussions pertaining to the mountain thanks, in part, to our experience in the field, varied expertise and in-depth knowledge of the territory and its landscape, cultural and historical heritage.
