Although many planning regulations ensure that Mount Royal remains a dominant feature of our city’s landscape, some views of and from the mountain that were supposed to be protected, are progressively being lost through the construction of real estate projects in Griffintown, most notably those along the Lachine Canal.
A public consultation is a golden opportunity to block the loss of our unique landscapes and improve biodiversity across the territory.
To confront the challenges posed by the development and density of this district on the outskirts of Montréal’s downtown, Les Amis has issued recommendations that should be integrated into Griffintown’s next urban development plan.
Some of our main recommendations
- When elaborating a new vision for Griffintown, build in the importance of preserving Mount Royal in our city’s landscape, as well as views of other Montréal landmarks, such as the Lachine Canal, the Saint Lawrence River and the Montérégie hills
- Make protecting views of and from the mountain, as well as passageways between distinctive elements of the landscape, a cross-cutting priority in each of the seven proposed development principles
- Focus on connectivity and landscape diversity in the planning of green and natural spaces to promote biodiversity
In coming months, we will closely follow the outcome of this public consultation, as well as actions taken by the South-West borough, to ensure the continuity and enhancement of Mount Royal’s silhouette in our city’s landscape.
